Harbor Freight Blast Gun Wont Feed

  1. Harbor Freight Sand Blasting Cabinet Problems

OK so I purchased a HF blashing cabinet thinking it would make my life so much easier for cleaning parts prior to sanding etc yada yada yada. After spending the majority of the day yesterday assembling and farting around with the cabinet I could not get it to work correctly. It will blow sand for a fraction of a second right when I pull the trigger then stop blowing the glass bead. I am using the 25 lbs box of 60 grit glass bead they sell. I can use the blaster if I pull let off then pull and let off again in rapid succession but my hand and wrist starts to cramp up rapidly as well

The gun does have a noticeable air leak where the trigger is when the trigger is pulled. I'm thinking there may be something wrong with the gun. I have not tried to use the motor guard filter yet to remove air/oil from the air supply. I will try that next and if it don't work as it should I think I may try to see if HF will swop out the gun part for me. I really don't want to have to return the hole cabinet and reassemble another one.

Does any one have any experience with the big HF blasting cabinet?

I am assuming this is a syphon type gun if so there needs to have a small hole in the pick up tube to allow air to mix with the sand/beads, the air flow is not strong enough to suck it into the gun without the air mixing to fluff it up.

Check out YouTube for videos, there are several on that cabinet. I saw one that involved modifications to the draw tube and the venting of it.

  4. Re: Harbor Freight Sand Blasting Cabinet Problems

Thanks guys I'll look into the youtube videos. No difference with the motor guard filter being used.

The pick-up tube is a double tube. Make sure there is some space between the hose connection and the outer tube at the top. That is where air needs to enter to vent the inner pick-up tube at the bottom end. I pulled the pick-up tube out of my cabinet (photo).

Edit to add: Check to make sure the air jet is installed correctly behind the blast nozzle. I had some issues with that but it's been a while and don't recall what the problem was. If it is not clear in the instructions let me know and I'll pull the nozzle out of my gun to check.

The owners manual is worthless and does not have a breakdown of the blast gun. I tried to remove the screw on the back of the gun last night and the O-ring on that screw was broken. I have watched a ton of vid's now. Have an idea of what I can do to make it a way better cabinet for a little over another $100. I'm just thinking that after spending close to $160 it should work right out of the box with out any needed mod's.

I have not been back out to the garage to look at the gun to see if I can see any thing wrong with the jet behind the nozzle.

  7. Re: Harbor Freight Sand Blasting Cabinet Problems

I bought one of those a few years ago and it works well, I siliconed all the seems on assembly as others state it leaks, I also put a vacuum port for the shop vac so it sucks all the dust out, im not remembering if I modified the original gun, its siphon fed like yours..it does use lots of air, I run about 150 psi through it..

  8. Re: Harbor Freight Sand Blasting Cabinet Problems

I have the same cabinet but not from HF, first thing you need to do is change out the suction hose with something actually made for suction then it'll work pretty good. Also put one of those little bucket vac's on the exhaust port that vents outside makes it very nice to blast with.

  9. Re: Harbor Freight Sand Blasting Cabinet Problems

I think the factory installed the siphon tube upside down or backwards I'm going to check it out when I get home

I reverse the siphon tube no difference I'm convinced it's a piece of s***

The tubing I have seen is way to soft and flattens out in use but you could also have a backwards tube.

  12. Re: Harbor Freight Sand Blasting Cabinet Problems

I think it is the siphon tube causing the issue.

Now I'm really pissed about this damn blast cabinet. I just went out to my garage to a friggin hot azz room with the compressor running continuously. compressor is hot as hell. Tank, pump, motor etc. Hopefully it did not do any permanent damage but I'm sure it shortened the life of the compressor. All because the hose ruptured on the gun causing the compressor to run continuously.

    That sucks!!!

Have had brand new air hoses from HF rated at 300psi blow in the first 2 minutes of charging them up to 120psi. any more I have a master ball valve on the main feed from the compressor that gets shut off at night... of course I have to remember to do it....

  19. Re: Harbor Freight Sand Blasting Cabinet Problems

Hang a 500w heating lamp inside the cabinet.
Stir after an hour and continue to do so until the media is dry.

Sounds like you have moisture in your media.
Blow out gun and pick up tube as well.

May have overlooked it but are you running a water separator in your air line?

  20. Re: Harbor Freight Sand Blasting Cabinet Problems

I have a water separator at the compressor and the Motorguard paper filter installed after the water separator. Im confident it is the pick up tube. Barely any air gets past the outside tube to create the cavitation or what ever its called for the sand to mix properly once it is sucked into the siphon tube.

I waited until the compressor cooled off to try and run the compressor again. It was able to fill the tank up and is not making any new strange noises yet any way.

Purchased a Rigid Shop Vac today at HD that has a lifetime warranty. It also came with a prefilter bag that lines the inside of the vaccuum canister which is a very nice thing to have when dealing with fine dust particles. I also purchased a cyclone dust collector trap that mounts on top of a 5 gallon bucket lid or other types of containers. I have my eyes on the Eastwood gun and foot pedal and I am also looking at a metered bottom feeding siphon valve for better control over the flow of the garnet or glass beads.

Going to do the best I can to save money and make this a nice professional grade blasting cabinet.

That dust cyclone is a great addition, I have a DIY one on my blaster cabinet and you will be shocked how fine the dust is coming out of the blaster.
I made another for my daughter's CNC router table to collect the wood dust, the first plastic 5 Gal bucket was not thick enough and it collapsed, had to get a stronger one

The cyclone dust collector cost me $17 on Amazon. I should be able to duplicate it if needed like what you have done there a court jester. Does the homemade jobber work as good as the factory molded plastic ones?

  25. Re: Harbor Freight Sand Blasting Cabinet Problems

    N2,

Best thing I've found for in a small blast cabinet to clean things up for welding (or painting) is "Black Magic" coal slag grit. IMO "glass beads" kind of suck for that.
